Dentistry involves the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of conditions, disorders and diseases affecting the teeth, gums and maxillofacial (associated with the jaw and face) region of the body. General dentists provide services related to the general maintenance of oral hygiene and tooth health.
Service and expertise is meticulous.. You won't be disappointed!
I have been a patient here for many yrs now and the only reason I go here is for the Hygienist who does a good job cleaning my teeth. I would never trust Dr Kim to do any procedure on me. This is because of 2 bad experience where he worked on my tooth. In both experience he worked on additional teeth without my permission while I was helplessly lying there in his chair not knowing whats going on , only to find out later that he has charged me for additional procedures which we never discussed.
It has been over 10 years but I will never forget my experience with Sonny Kim. I woke up this morning thinking about may experience and out of curiosity looked him up to see if he was still practicing. Let me tell you why, after 10 years, this still creeps into my mind.I was new to VA, just out of grad school and starting my first job in counseling. I found Sonny after not having seen a dentist in probably 10 years (it was before Obamacare so I had no insurance as a student). I had no pain in my mouth but I knew that I'd likely have a few fillings based on my dental history. To my shock, Sonny said I needed 4 root canals and on top of that, several fillings. I went in for the first of my fillings and the dental assistant plopped a form on my lap to sign and left the room. I saw the heading had "Extraction" and I started thinking, 'what else could this mean since I'm here for a filling?' I thought maybe they had to remove an old filling first? She came back and I asked for clarification and she said that I was there to get a tooth pulled. I said that I was there for a filling. She insisted I was wrong and walked over to consult her records. She realized she had messed me up with another patient and brushed it off. I never had good feelings in this place right down to the painful X-rays (I know, X-rays aren't painful but these were!) and the dental assistant with a bad attitude. So I got my filling with no issue and left slightly rattled. My next visit was the first root canal. I had zero pain in any of my teeth but I was young and dumb and trusted Sonny was doing his job honestly. He convinced me a gold tooth was the way to go because it was the far back top molar and l didn't have a smile like Julia Roberts so no one would see it. I got the gold tooth.I got to work the next day and I told my colleagues my dental story so far, with 3 more RC's coming. Thank goodness one of my older and wiser colleagues convinced me to get a second opinion. I took his advice and saw a dentist in Fairfax. He did an X-ray (not painful) and asked if I had any pain in my mouth. I told him I didn't have never have. He was very professional, being careful not to speak badly about another dentist. He said he saw no reason for any root canals and thought I probably didn't need the one I got since it didn't hurt. He said some doctors are just more 'aggressive'. Bad news did come however when he showed me the X-ray of the gold tooth and the weird space between it and the neighboring tooth that my new dentist said would cause food buildup and problems moving forward. He suggested having it replaced and recommended that I ask Sonny to fix it for free. I was a poor new professional and really didn't want to pay to have this fixed but I just couldn't get myself to go back to Sonny Kim's office. I paid the money to have the gold tooth removed and a nice porcelain replacement with my new dentist. As I had mentioned in the beginning of this review, it's been over 10 years since this all happened. I've moved and had several dentists. Guess what? No one has ever said I needed a root canal and there is still no pain in my mouth. The moral of the story is if you go to this dentist and he wants to extract or give a root canal or some other expensive procedure, get a second opinion! I wish I had, but instead, I lost a tooth that I will never get back and that still haunts me to this day. I hope others don't have the same experience and wish I had spoke up sooner so it wouldn't happen to someone else.
I got a root canal from him that I never needed. He wanted to give me 3 more but after a second opinion I found I didn’t need them. Ten years later my mouth is still pain free with no root canal.
Love the service and people in the office. Dr. Kim takes great pride in his practice, which is evident by how much he has put back into it over the last several years. Every time I went there it seemed like he had some new piece of technology.
I know it has been over 10 years that he has been my dentist. I have horrible teeth that just break so he has fixed lots of problems. I think he is very fastidious. His staff are very friendly. My teeth and gums are much healthier. His office is pretty high tech. I have recommended him to friends without hesitation. His office is in the group of little brown offices right by Reston Pkwy. He will be my dentist for a long time.
Thorough, professional and excellent value for the time and money spent.Staff was courteous and friendly.

Don't normally write reviews but I had my wisdom teeth taken out by Dr. Kim, and compared to other stories I've heard, I think I got really lucky in having him do the procedure. He explained everything to me clearly and thoroughly. He and his staff were extremely considerate, patient and professional. Also, the method he used made my healing process so quick. My sister's wisdom teeth extraction with a different doctor (same procedure) took a week to heal and 2 weeks for the swelling to go down completely, but I was pretty much back to normal after 3 days. For my checkups/cleanings, the receptionists and hygienists provide good customer service and they're friendly/easy to talk to. They're also great at reaching out and reminding you of when to come in for your next appointment. So glad I found Dr. Kim's practice!
My family has had TERRIBLE experiences with Dentists in Virginia in the past few years, but when we found Dr. Kim we didn't have to worry again! He is an excellent Dentist, and his office staff is always helpful and friendly and have gone above and beyond to work with our insurance and our budget to help us afford this excellent dental care. I highly recommend them!
I have been a patient at Dr. Kim's practice since 2015 and have had an overwhelmingly positive experience to date. Dr. Kim and the staff are courteous, genuine, and professional. After having neglected my teeth for a few years, Dr. Kim provided several fillings and two crowns on my teeth. During the procedure Dr. Kim took numerous photos and extensive documentation. Dr. Kim explained multiple times that this was necessary when insurance companies decided to deny claims.A few months later, as dental providers do, my claim was denied as unnecessary, and they suggested that I should have first attempted a filling. While I am not a dentist, the tooth appeared barely intact after the plaque removal, and I am quite certain that Dr. Kim made the right choice.Helen, one of Dr. Kim's staff members called me when my claim was denied and informed me that they were challenging the insurance companies decision with additional documentation and a write up. Additionally, I was assured over voicemail that under no circumstance would I pay anything more than I already had paid in the office (which was the amount I would have paid assuming my insurance gave coverage). After 3 or 4 repeated submissions by my provider, the insurance eventually caved and paid the bill. All of this based on two factors: the thoroughness of Dr. Kim's documentation, and the insistence of Dr. Kim and his staff (Helen in particular) that my insurance provider pay their dues instead of myself.Additionally, at my last visit I mentioned I was getting married in the near future to Helen. She informed me that the practice provides a complimentary teeth bleaching to one of the parties! In summary it is hard to differentiate one dental practice from another, because quite frankly, teeth are teeth and we all want them to just work, it is easy to differentiate good people from predatory people. In a time where dental insurance providers seem quite predatory (at quite a penalty to the wallet!), I am glad to have a strong advocate in my dental provider. Dr. Kim and his practice are good people. I think good people deserve some degree of a shout out and that is why I am writing this review on my Friday night!
Maria the hygienist has been cleaning my teeth since I was a kid. She always has a gentle hand and a smiling face at every appointment. I love my visits with her!
My family has been going to Dr. Kim's office for 20+ years. About 15 years ago we moved an hour and a half away and still continue to see Dr. Kim because we receive such quality care it's worth the travel time. Over the years we've noticed how Helen, his wife and office manager, knows the patients personally and is mindful of them individually. Dr. Kim is dedicated to his craft, keeping up on the latest procedures and technology which has built our trust and confidence in him through the many different procedures our family has had to have done. We look forward to seeing the hygienists for regular cleaning because they are gentle and genuinely kind people. We highly recommend Dr. Kim's office for a good experience with any dental needs!
My family has been seeing Dr. Kim for 15+ years. We've now moved but are happy to make the 30 minute drive to his office for our dental care. Great office staff. Friendly and skilled hygienists. Dr. Kim is very good at what he does!
Dr. Sonny Kim is our family dentist for over 20 years - All the routine dental visits were always greeted by a very warm and welcome staff. More time consuming procedures (dental filling, crowns) were done quickly and painless. Highly recommended Dentist in the Northern Virginia area
My family has been seeing Dr. Kim, and his staff since at least 2008. His staff is loyal and Helen, his wife is the office manager. They are friendly and welcoming at each visit. Helen and I have exchanged book recommendations and children's stories over the years and I always enjoy seeing her even if I am dreading the dental procedure that awaits me. I highly recommend Dr Kim and his office for any dental needs. I have had many teeth replaced and several root canals. Dr. Kim prides himself in learning new technology and providing his patients with the continued benefits that advancing dentistry has to offer. He continues to enjoy learning in his chosen profession and is constantly moving his practice forward with the newest technologies. I have not only seen this but benefited over the years between procedures. My youngest son, Eric had his wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Kim. My oldest son had the procedure done by an oral surgeon at much greater cost and greater discomfort. Eric's wisdom teeth were removed by Dr. Kim in the summer of 2015, and he presented less swelling and pain then my older son's did four years prior.
Excellent treatment from beginning to end. The staff is super courteous and Dr. Kim is a true expert. After a detailed checkup he lays out the plan to complete your desired goals and offers assistance and, when needed, a recommendation. A+ service all the way!
